Get Involved at Leaf & Feather
Would you like to help create the most ethical and eco-friendly chicken farm on the planet?
The next stage of Leaf & Feather's development is to build housing for a 'broody flock' of adorable bantam and silkie hens who will incubate and raise laying hens to produce eggs, and male chickens to produce meat, for our local community via Chettle Village Store.
How will this be good for the chickens?
This will mean that our laying hens and meat chickens will come into the world with the loving care and safety of a mother hen. This has long-lasting welfare benefits for the chickens, compared to being born into stressful, loveless hatcheries and being reared with only a heat lamp for comfort. It also means that no chicks will be gassed as soon as they are born, which is sadly the case for male chicks in commercial systems.
And good for people too!
Our 'broody flock' will also provide a wonderful resource for children and adults alike to enjoy the recreational and therapeutic benefits of spending time with chickens and chicks, whilst learning about chicken welfare and sustainable, high welfare food production.
We need to raise Β£3,000 to achieve this next step,

Meet the Bantams
Thank you to the children of Chettle for giving our bantam chicks their fabulous names!
Biscoff
Biscoff, like her name implies is very sweet and has delicious golden plumage. She is more reserved than some of her sisters, which makes her all the more charming, in my opinion!
Coconut
Coconut is a beautiful lavender hen who is bold, friendly and likes to remind the other bantams whoβs boss! She has tonnes of personality and will often waddle over to say hello!
Duster
Duster is a βfrizzleβ bantam, making her look like an adorable little feather duster and earning her this sweet name. She is the smallest of the bantams but she makes up for this in her big personality!
Frazzle
Frazzle has remarkable frizzled feathers. Despite her bold look, she is a shy hen. I think this makes it all the more special when you have earned her trust enough for her to come and say hello!
Jonathan Junior
Jonathan Jr was given this name by one of the Chettle children in honour of her Dad, as this little cutie is his favourite! Itβs easy to see why β this happy hen is so sweet, and a beautiful apricot colour.
Poseidon
This little bantam has been given a powerful name by the Chettle children, and she is worthy of it! She has a bold and friendly nature and is often one of the first hens to hop over to say hello.
Colonel
Colonel is the biggest and boldest of the bantams; perhaps this is why the children of Chettle named her Colonel, sensing her leadership skills! Can you see the beautiful subtle green in her plumage?
Oreo
This black and white beauty is an inquisitive soul who loves to get in on the action with her bigger sisters, nothing much phases this funny friendly little hen!
Pepper
Pepper is a quiet, gentle soul who likes nothing more than to have a relaxing dustbath or perch and watch her sisters waddle about. She is a very calming hen to be around.
Spirit
Spirit is a stunning bantam who has an ethereal look and presence, and I just love the name the Chettle children chose for her.
